As if we needed more encouragement to stuff ourselves with steak and chips, Glasgow’s newest restaurant, Bar + Block, is offering a 25 percent discount on food to celebrate its start. Enthusiastic carnivores can register on their website to receive a voucher that is valid for six months.
This all-day dining restaurant is part of the five-year-old Bar + Block brand which has 16 other branches in England and Northern Ireland including Birmingham, Bath, London and Belfast. Owned by Whitbread, it’s a contemporary version of their Beefeater chain that was particularly big in the ’70s and’ 80s – the heyday of steakhouses. The only Scottish branch has now opened at 24 Howard Street.
Expect something very different from a Beefeater or Whitbread’s other pub brand, Brewers Fayre, thanks to a bright and airy eatery with lots of light wood, copper surfaces and the brand’s signature cow in neon.

While it’s family-friendly and kids can eat the hot breakfast for free, this is their attempt to attract a younger crowd.
Check your diet at the door after the lockdown as the menu includes steaks, burgers, Sunday lunches and unlimited breakfasts (the full fry-up or a continental breakfast) for just £ 8.99 plus cocktails, including a Gordon’s Gin Lemon Drop, Craft Beer, offers and Pravha Pilsner on tap.
Individual dishes include the 10 ounce Spiral Cut Filet marinated in garlic and parsley (£ 28.50), Surf + Turf (£ 25.95) – an 8 ounce beef tenderloin with half a lobster tail – or the Steak Sampler (£ 27.95) – three 4 ounces Steaks, fillet of beef, fillet and rod. As a statement of the would-be trend status, each steak is dripped with samphire instead of peas, for example, as well as a selection of sauce (including a stroganoff version), house salad or the triple-cooked, lumpy French fries beef.
Another signature is the Mighty Block Burger – an 8oz beef patty with melted ripe cheddar sauce, crispy onions, pulled beef brisket, a pickled cucumber spear and burger sauce, served in a brioche bun with chips on the side. In case anyone ever returns to the central Glasgow offices, there is also an express menu with a selection of dishes under £ 10 served in 10 minutes.
