Photo studios in Spain are losing business to police stations.

Spain’s DNI 4.0 will be implemented in August, but unlike in previous years, the recordings are made directly at the police station. Professional photo studios are now complaining about this new measure because almost 100% of their work depends on passport photos and many fear they will be closed.

Pedro has a photography studio in Dos Hermanas, Seville, and says he doesn’t want to think about the arrival of this new DNI that made him endure “nights without sleep because of some absurd thing,” he complained. “I can’t believe the state gave us the competition,” said Pedro.

There are around 3,700 photo studios in Spain. The industry estimates that 13% will have to close and 3,500 jobs will be lost.

“We are not against digitization, we are against the photos that are still being taken from being taken in police stations,” explains Juan Mendizábal, President of the Eufoto Association.

Photographers claim that they can adapt to the new digital format by not using paper, but having to do so without losing their jobs.

What is the DNI 4.0?

The National Police’s DNIE Digital Identity Program announces the development of a free app that will allow residents to prove their identity and sign it electronically from any mobile device. This way, we don’t have to deal with the cumbersome electronic ID readers we normally use on our computers that are plugged into a USB port.

In this way, it would not only be easy to physically identify yourself in everyday life with this electronic ID in a mobile app, but also to identify yourself via this app in the digital environment in order to, for example, make income tax returns, enter the virtual office of a public institution and exit They end up doing most of the physical procedures that we continue to do because we don’t have real electronic ID.

It is possible that this app will be ready and available in 2022.
