BBC Back in Time for Birmingham viewers call for ‘daytimer’ raves to return

Back in Time for Birmingham viewers were left calling for the 80s ‘daytimer’ raves to return to the city after they were highlighted on the BBC show. The BBC show follows the Sharma family through five decades of life in the city as they explore everything about British Asian life.

Daughter Alisha and son Akash explored how a boom in South Asian culture in 1989 in the city sparked a new cultural phenomenon that went on to spread across the country – the ‘daytimer’ where nightclubs would open and blast out music during the day. The program explained that youngsters from the culture were “less able to go out at night” so the events enabled the South Asian teens and 20 year olds to go clubbing in venues like The Powerhouse and The Hummingbird.

Viewers were excited to see their childhoods re-lived through the programme, while others called for the daytimers to return. They took to Twitter to comment.
