Aldi’s Solar Eclipse gin range is a giant leap for spirits fans

This week some parts of the world were fortunate enough to witness a solar eclipse.

The heavenly spectacle caught the attention of space fans and budding photographers, but not all could see the phenomenon.

Those who didn’t, including myself, could only have a look at the Ring of Fire event on our news feeds or on social media.

But it didn’t matter to me.

While many stood outside wondering if they would see the wonder of space, I celebrated the solar eclipse my way – with gin.

Because a new range of beverages “Out of this World” has arrived at Aldi.

Elements by Haysmith’s has launched a strictly limited edition – a Solar Gin and an Eclipse Gin (£ 14.99 each for 70cl at Aldi), which are inspired by the heavenly events of summer.

The Elements from Haymiths Solar Gin and Eclipse Gin

Haysmith describes their Solar Gin as sweet and punchy, with lush aromas of black currants accented by botanical notes.

It was hard for me to tell if it was sweet or not because I’ve probably committed the ultimate sin when it comes to drinking gin (apologies in advance to die-hard gin fans).

I avoided gin for many years under the false impression that the taste was an acquired one when in reality I didn’t like a tonic.

So when I tried a gin with lemonade, I realized that I had spent many years of my drinking youth drinking nasty cocktails instead of trying exciting new gin flavors that were exploding in the beverage market.

So yes, I like gin with lemonade, I like my drink sweet and soft and the Solar Gin certainly fulfilled that.

Aldi’s Elements by Haysmith’s Solar Gin contains juniper and grapefruit peels, plus rose petals and lavender

The most impressive thing about it is the black currant notes that can still come from the sweetness of the lemonade.

A touch of lavender also adds to the taste and gives it an elegant, soft taste with every sip.

My favorite of the two, however, is the Eclipse Gin (I also love the purple bottle).

This gin has a fascinating aroma, especially if you haven’t read the label beforehand to spoil the taste surprise.

It has a pleasant, peppery punch and a long, dry finish, which makes it better suited to lemonade compared to solar gin.

The combination of juniper and Sichuan pepper makes the gin perfect for a relaxing summer evening in the garden.

Since the Eclipse Gin also contains black pepper in its botanicals, the taste can come through more without becoming too strong.

If you want a tonic to go with these gins, I would choose the Solar Gin because it has a lighter taste, a peppery or original tonic would be good.

The Eclipse gin may need something sweeter, like a lemonade or citrus soda.

Whether you’re soaking up the sun’s energy or sipping cocktails with friends on a moonlit night, Aldi’s new gin from this world will be a great addition to your drinks menu for World Gin Day 2021 on Saturday (June 12th).

Here you can buy the range.

The Elements Gins are two of five new Specialbuys spirits that will hit Aldi shelves this June.

Others are premium whiskeys: Glen Marnoch 12-year-old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whiskey (£ 19.99), which recently won gold in the International Spirits Challenge, and Glen Orrin 3-year-old Single Grain Ale Cask Whiskey (£ 14.99). as well as a recurring fan favorite; Aldi’s award-winning Fletcher’s LBV Port in gift box (£ 9.99).
