BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – More than 9,000 students tested positive for COVID-19 over the past week across the state, according to Superintendent Eric Mackey.
As cases rise across the state, so do the cases in children, with more and more children becoming sick.
If a child tests positive for COVID but shows no signs of serious illness, the first step is to start voting.
“Parents need to speak to their doctor by phone,” said Dr. Karen Landers from ADPH.
This way, the pediatrician knows if symptoms are getting worse and can recommend treatment as soon as possible.
In the meantime, Dr. Karen Landers that you can take steps.
“We want to keep the fever down with appropriate fever control medications and appropriate doses of these fever control medications,” said Dr. Landers.
Over-the-counter options like Tylenol, Motrin, or Advil for children within their age and weight range can help.
“Keep the child hydrated,” she added.
This advice is especially important if the child’s tummy is upset, a common symptom of COVID.
And one of the most difficult tasks – to keep your distance as much as possible.
“Of course there are times when in a situation in our home, especially with younger children, we cannot separate our children from other family members.”
Instead, just do the best you can, cleaning, sanitizing, and washing as often as possible.
She says even if the children are fine, leave them at home for the full ten days as they could still infect other people.
