Back in school, I decided I was too cool for floury pizza or whatever on the dinner menu that day and decided to go for Pasta King instead.
I would feel so cool to eat the tiny tub of really wet noodles – and in a sauce that wasn’t always tasty (has anyone else noticed that the meatballs had a strong liquorice flavor?).
Well, honestly, when I heard about Coco di Mama, it was the first thing I thought of. Even the tubs looked similar.
While it’s dubious, the chain’s popularity (with venues across the country) made me decide to give it a try.
I don’t make dairy products so this reduced the number of options available to me, but when I checked the website I found that the “slow cooked Bolognese” was dairy-free and even won the Great Taste Award in 2020.
So I decided to go for it alongside their vegan garlic and rosemary pizza bread, the Billionaire Slice, and a Cornish Orchards Apple and Rhubarb drink.
When it arrived it was taste time and frankly I was nervous.
Midi Slow cooked Bolognese – € 6.10
The pasta pot tasted really good, although it reminded me of Pasta King at school

I went for the Rigatoni Pasta for the smaller size, unlike Pasta King, there were other topping options than cheese so I also added some chili flakes, truffle oil and arugula to get the most of my experience.
I found the arugula a bit uncomfortable in texture, but the overall taste was really good.
There was a little water left at the bottom of the cup, and it reminded me of a better version of Pasta King.
It wasn’t muddy, but it wasn’t entirely al dente either. I would probably get it again.

Garlic Rosemary Pizza Bread – € 1.95
The garlic bread was amazing and definitely worth trying

When it comes to garlic bread it’s really hard to go wrong, but I was impressed with how right this bread was.
It was on the small side, but at the price you can’t fault it.
I would definitely get it again and would say it was the highlight of the entire meal.

Billionaire Disc – £ 3.95
At first I thought this dessert was a piece of meat
(Image: Jada Jones)
I know vegan and dairy-free desserts can be tricky, so I often resort to making my own at home.
But this one was particularly bad.
It was just very grainy, which I don’t like in a dessert.
The uncomfortable mouthfeel was enough to put me off, although the taste wasn’t terrible.

Cornish Orchards apple and rhubarb – € 2.50
This drink was fruity and light, it was a lovely accompaniment
(Image: Jada Jones)
This soft drink is sweet without being sickly, with the subtle apple and rhubarb flavor that makes it taste like a warm day.
I was pleasantly surprised, with a light fizzy drink and balanced flavors, it went great with the meal.
I will definitely keep an eye on this in the future as it was lovely.
