Would you like COVID-19 vaccination cards? BC applauded the “solid system” while Ontario, Alberta strongly opposed the idea

After British Columbia partnered with Quebec to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for access to services such as restaurants and gyms, recent survey results show that areas of the country are the most and least supportive of vaccine certification for home use.

The Yahoo / Maru public opinion poll was conducted between August 9th and 10th of 1,504 randomly selected Canadian adults who are online panelists for Maru Voice Canada. It turns out that 70 percent of Canadians want a vaccination card such as a driver’s license with a QR code or a similar app.

The survey found that respondents in Atlantic Canada were the least supportive of having a vaccination card or a digital app for local use. 37 percent said they were against this type of certification, followed by Alberta (35 percent) and Ontario (30 percent).

The provinces that most favored this type of vaccination certificate were Quebec, with 74 percent of respondents in that province, followed by those in Manitoba, Saskatchewan (74 percent) and BC (71 percent).

What do we know about how BC will implement its vaccination record system?

As of September 13, BC will require proof of vaccination for everyone to have access to a range of recreational activities.

This contains:

  • Indoor tickets for concerts, theater, dance, symphony and sporting events

  • Indoor and outdoor dining in restaurants, pubs and bars

  • Night clubs and casinos

  • Cinemas

  • Gyms, swimming pools and recreational facilities. Does not include youth recreational sports

  • Indoor group training with high intensity

  • Indoor organized gatherings such as weddings, parties, conferences, meetings and workshops

  • Indoor organized group recreational classes and activities such as pottery and arts, does not include K through 12 school and pre and post school programs

  • Post-secondary student dormitory on campus

Specifically, everyone aged 12 and over must receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by September 13th to be fully vaccinated by October 24th. Post-secondary students must be partially vaccinated by September 7th to access services in these settings.

The story goes on

A website will be available on September 13th providing confidential access to each person in BC’s vaccination record. This vaccination card can be saved on a smartphone, but a paper option is also offered.

Visitors from Canada, outside of British Columbia, must present a provincial / territorial recognized vaccination card and government-issued ID from the same province. Visitors from outside Canada are required to present the proof of vaccination they used to enter Canada and their passport.

Several people used social media to comment on BC’s announcement of vaccination records on Monday.
