GALAL YAFAI could become King of the Olympic Aviators this summer, but is still being shut down by its own 8th “Little Bird” division.
The 28-year-old Birmingham flyweight took gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and was on track in Tokyo 2020 until the pandemic delayed the Games.

The Japanese storefront could put Yafai in the same pro ranks where big brothers Super-Fly Kal and Super-Bantam Gamal deserve.
But the 5ft 4in star still assumes the lowest weights are small compared to the heavyweight division with giant stars like Team GB hero Anthony Joshua.
“I think the big boys will always get the most attention and I would rather see an Anthony Joshua fight than any of my brothers!” he laughed.

“The heavyweights are just more interesting. I would rather see some dinosaurs fighting than some little birds.
“The lower weights may have the better technical boxers, but the heavyweights are where the excitement is and I don’t think this will ever change in boxing or in any sport.
“But I’ve seen my brother Kal become world champion in his class and I think I can do that.
“And I don’t need the £ 10m – £ 20m per fight that AJ and the heavyweight champions are getting.”

All three are the sons of British boxing icons and have made it their business to convince critical fans that they are worth far more than their famous surnames.
For Yafai, the third fighting brother from a brilliant and usually very humble family, his amateur medal helped him outperform his older siblings.

He said, “I had some problems in the beginning, but over the years I’ve achieved things of my own.
“I don’t want to sound bad, but in the amateurs I have now surpassed my brothers. I’m not telling them this, but I think it will be published in this article now.
“Now I have to try to copy, compare or surpass their successes with the professionals when the time comes, but successful brothers in sport do not put any additional pressure on me, we all just try to do our best. ”
The 31-year-old Kal held the WBA world title between December 2016 and February 2020 and now has a record of 27: 1.

The 29-year-old Gamal suffered his second career loss in May while battling for the European crown and is now 18-2.
And Gal has enjoyed all of the related success that her victories have brought him. He laughed, “It was a great help to see two whole careers ahead of me. But especially when they did it well, I always liked it.
“Now I guess I’ll have to try to pay them back part of the loan and win Olympic gold to give them back a bit of shine, as I’ve enjoyed many of them in the past.”
