Rangers eye move for Wolves defender wanted by Birmingham who was ‘watched’ by recruitment duo Ross Wilson and John Park

RANGERS could swoop for Wolves defender Dion Sanderson as Michael Beale looks to bolster his squad.

The versatile centre-half who can also play right-back, has been on loan at Birmingham City since August, and was watched by Ibrox director of football Ross Wilson and scout John Park last week.

Ironically he was loaned to QPR last season just before Beale briefly took charge at Loftus Road.

But Birmingham have said they want to buy the 23-year-old ace, whose Molineux deal runs until 2025, so Gers would have to at least match any fee agreed between the Midlands rivals.

Beale has been short of defensive options since succeeding Giovanni van Bronckhorst last month.

He was forced to field midfielders John Lundstram and James Sands at centre-back for his first game against Hibs.

He’s likely to play fit-again Connor Goldson and Ben Davies against Celtic in tomorrow’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

But injury-plagued John Souttar and Filip Helander have just one appearance between them this season, with the Swede out of contract in the summer.

Now Sanderson, 23, has emerged as a signing possibility this month in Gers’ price range as Beale seeks to put his stamp on the Ibrox squad.

Meanwhile a Rangers-linked striker could be on the move to the English top flight.

Brentford have Sunderland forward Ross Stewart in their sights.

The Scot is locked in contract talks with the Black Cats but is some way from agreement on terms so the club may have to listen to a serious bid.

The Bees have started intensive checks on the former Ross County striker who is back in Tony Mowbray’s in-form team after injury.

Sunderland’s terms amount to around £10,000-a-week for Stewart which is almost three times his salary.

But he could earn more elsewhere, especially in the Premier League.

Brentford are now sweating on a potential lengthy betting ban for top scorer and talisman Ivan Toney, who is also injured.

The former St Mirren forward has previously been linked with moves back to Scotland in recent transfer windows with Rangers.

He is also being watched by Greek champions Olympiakos.
