The Platinum Jubilee was barely over before the Royal Family were out celebrating sport. The Commonwealth Games took place in Birmingham and the Earl of Wessex, Vice-Patron, The Commonwealth Games Federation, attended many of the events. There were visits, too, from the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte. The Games continued into August with Prince Edward formally closing them after several successful weeks of sport.

It had been another bumpy year for Spain’s royals by the time King Felipe, Queen Letizia and their daughters arrived in Mallorca for their annual stay. Huge interest in the brief return of King Juan Carlos to Spain, after two years of exile, had been followed by the news that King Felipe’s sister, Infanta Cristina, was parting from her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, after he began a relationship soon after his controlled release from prison. However, the royals were all smiles on one of several engagements in Mallorca. The traditional stay proved to be a moment to reset the royal year.
